Specifying Bespoke Fire Rated Pocket Sliding Doors

Pocket doors have become increasingly popular over the last few years, which is not a surprise: they are an excellent way to save space while maintaining a consistent look and feel.

Introduction to Pocket Doors and Kits

Pocket doors first appeared in the 1850’s and reached a peak of popularity in 1880s, though the demand fell off during the 1920s. The reasons for their initial popularity remain true today, as they are safer and more child friendly than surface mounted sliding doors. Why have they seen a resurgence lately? There are two leading reasons.

Firstly, great improvements have been made in both functionality and safety. Pocket doors and sliding kits can now be made to meet fire safety regulations, and better manufacturing of sliding kit parts has removed the notorious problems of doors falling off tracks and squeaky tracks and runners.

Secondly, contemporary living and the pandemic has encouraged projects to move toward open plan living, and pocket doors are very good for creating space-saving transitions between open and private that open plan living relies on.
